Western Birding Loop
On-site Program
The Western Birding Loop is a full-day birding trip departing from Mayagüez and
combines several birding sites of the western and southwestern regions.
Depending on selected sites and time of the year, we will be looking for
endemic species, plus other critically endangered (Yellow-shouldered Blackbird),
endangered (West Indian Whistling-Duck, Piping Plover, Sharp-shinned Hawk),
and threatened species (White-cheeked Pintail, Broad-winged Hawk, Caribbean
Coot, Snowy Plover, White-crowned Pigeon, Elfin-Woods Warbler). You can
extend the day for our Nightjar.
Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge (Salt Flats)
On-site Program
Located in the Southwest, the salt flats not only are considered one of the
most important points for migrating shorebirds in the Eastern Caribbean, but
are also important as prime fish habitat. This area is vital nesting and feeding
area for many species. In here you will find the Yellow-shouldered
Blackbird, Snowy Plover, Wilson´s Plover, Least Tern, Peregrine Falcon, PR
Flycatcher, Caribbean Elaenia, just to name a few. In 1999 the salt flats
became part of the US Fish and Wildlife Service system. More than 118 bird
species have been recorded at the salt flats; 28 shorebirds. In 2010 it was
designated as Caribbean’s first Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve.

Laguna Cartagena National Wildlife Refuge
On-site Program
Cartagena Lagoon is a remnant of what was a large open expanse of water
and one of the most important freshwater habitats for migrating waterfowl
and aquatic birds in the Archipelago of Puerto Rico and it is administered by
Fish & Wildlife Service. It is the only freshwater marsh of significant size
remaining in the southwest, almost half of the birds recorded in our national
territory have been seen in the lagoon and adjacent hills...and we have permits
to go there! This is your best opportunity to look for the West Indian Whistling
and Masked ducks.

For most birders, the Western region is probably the best place to go birding in Puerto Rico. This is the home for several endemics, such as: Elfin-woods Warbler, Nightjar, and the Yellow-shouldered Black Bird, plus the Lesser Antillean Pewee. Depending on how cooperative birds can be, you will new from one to two days to find all the endemics while driving from one birding spot to the other. We have several options for half or full birding trips. If you are visiting us during the first weekend of December, you should probably want to go as a volunteer of the CBC in Mayagüez (Saturday) or Maricao (Sunday), or maybe both. You can also combine the North Belt Corridor half day birding trip with one of the half day options in the western region if you want to see all endemics within one long day. Please contact us for price.
