COMPANY STANDARDS

  • Promoting tourism that is economically productive, socially responsible and
    environmentally friendly
  • Encouraging considerate, culturally and environmentally conscious habits amongst those
    who travel with us
  • Involving local population in our tourism projects and offerings
  • Providing regular training to our staff in the principles and practices of responsible tourism
  • Encouraging continuing education to our staff
  • Ensuring that our guides, interpreters, and leaders pass on to our clients an insight and
    understanding of our country.
  • Insisting that our business partners meet our own high environmental and social
standards, and that, where necessary, they receive training to improve their understanding
    of the issues.

Partners - Guides and Leaders
Whenever possible, we provide employment opportunities to residents of the regions covered by
Birding Puerto Rico, henceforth, economic benefits go directly to local businesses and people.
Nothing better than a local insider to provide the necessary insight of the region to visitors.  Tour
leaders are trained in low-impact sustainable tourism travel best practices.

Partners - Accommodations and Meals
We sponsor small hotels, paradores, and guest houses locally owned.  We support local
economy by eating in restaurants and mesones within the region where our services are offered.

Partners - Transportation
When transportation is provided we use our own vehicle or local transportation operators.  For
individual birding trips (up to 4 PAX) we use a 2008 Honda Pilot:  ULEV (Ultra Low Emission
Vehicle), C. A. R. B. and BIN5-EPA Certified, with all necessary permits from the Government  to
offer transportation (fully-licensed operation).

Group Size
Birding trips are offered to individuals or small groups.   Tour packages are kept to 8 passengers.
We encourage tour wholesalers and travel agents to keep the size of their groups to a
minimum.  One birder will be assigned the first day  for every 6 - 8 people in different vehicles
(plus driver and birder).  Please contact us for price.

Christmas Bird Counts
Through the Puerto Rican Association of Interpretation and Education, Inc. (APIE) we have been
coordinating three Christmas Bird Counts:  Maricao, Mayagüez, Maunabo, and Vieques Island.
Although these are celebrated within the time period of the Audubon CBC, these are not
considered official CBC.

Nevertheless, our goal is to provide the experience to the general public, at the same time that
Tour Guides can improve their bird watching techniques.  Data is collected and share with
coordinators, volunteers, and site officials.

Official Audubon CBC celebrated in Puerto Rico are:  San Juan Estuary, Cabo Rojo, Caño
Tiburones, and Fajardo, which includes Ceiba and El Yunque National Forest.
"As the path of the birds in the air or of fishes in the water is invisible, even so is the path of the possessors of wisdom."
